OVERVIEW

I was in, “the mood for seafood”, while touring Hobart recently and there was no shortage of choices or suggestions of venue’s available. No surprise there since we were right at the waters edge in this great little city at the bottom of the world. One name that consistently came up was MURES Lower and Upper deck seafood restaurant. When these guys say fresh seafood they mean business. They have their own fishing vessel (The Diana) which specializes in longline fishing and  a processing plant. The place has been catching fish and serving seafood since 1973 and the philosophy of the family owned and operated eatery is ” fresh locally sourced seafood from hook to plate”. With credentials like that how could you not make a booking for dinner.

I was promptly seated even though I had decided earlier to not have dinner that evening. The concierge had attempted to make the booking earlier and they decided to honour it since there were some cancellations. Upon entering you sense the very comfortable atmosphere here and make note of the great views out on the harbour from your table. The  seats are comfortable and there is plenty of space between tables for easy conversation.

The drinks selection is extensive and covers Tasmanian signature cocktails, beers and cider, spirits, and of course, wines. I chose the Tasmanian Storm Bay by Nocton Vineyard Merlot Cabernet 2017 while I waited for the main course. Here again the MENU  is an extensive ala carte filled with many options. The one item that caught my eye very quickly was their Tasmanian Seafood Laksa (GFA) which included scallops, Spring Bay mussels, premium white fish, Atlantic salmon, Bass Strait squid, tempura oyster mushrooms, noodles, fresh herbs and chilli. I paired this up with the Garden Salad (GF/DF/V) containing organic coral, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onion and vinaigrette.

I’m not sure if staffing levels were low this particular evening but I found the service a smidge tardy. After the initial order I found that there was quite a bit of time to study the decor, patrons, and the wonderful view as dusk settled in. It was worth the wait as the seafood laksa turned out to be the best I’ve ever tasted. The garden salad was succulent and fresh as well. Outstanding!

THE DEBRIEF

The service is a little slow but the food is fresh and a gastronomical treat. The Tasmanian wine is excellent with a wonderful nose and a dry, smooth finish. If your in Hobart I would recommend booking dinner here at least one night during the stay. If I visit again Mures will be on my to do list more than once.

👍👍👍 EXCELLENT
