REVIEW SENIA RESTAURANT HONOLULU

THE BRIEF

PICTURE OF FRONT ENTRANCE AND ONE OF THE TABLES AT SENIA.

My assistant knows all the great dining establishments in Waikiki and she recommended we try Senia in China Town. It’s a quaint little restaurant next to THE PIG AND THE LADY RESTAURANT which I’ve also utilized not so long ago. It describes itself as featuring Regional American cuisine and using fresh locally sourced ingredients. Chef Rush provides some French techniques to the small dishes that make up the menu.

Senia is a play on the word “xenia”, the ancient Greek ideology of hospitality. The restaurant is a small, intimate and modern place to dine. Great for family or a romantic dinner for two. It’s known for the friendly, knowledgeable staff they have. My experience was no different as we received excellent service at the table.

A PICTURE OF THE PINOT NOIR ORDERED

The WINE list is extensive and there is something for everyone there. Being partial to Pinot the choice for the night was from Sonoma County. It had a wonderfully smooth and unobtrusive finish with a nice nose of cherry and would go well with what we were about to order.

A PICTURE OF THE AHI CIGARS DISH

The nice thing about having many small plates on the MENU is you can try a variety of food in one sitting. I like to share plates with my dinner companion and so we chose several interesting and different items. We started with the Ahi tuna cigars served with tamarind and aioli dipping sauce that turned out to be a perfect partner for the crispy treat. Wonderful dish!

A PICTURE OF THE SEA SCALLOPS DISH

Next up were the Maine Sea Scallops served with Okinawan Sweet Potatoes and White Peaches plus a sprinkle of sesame. Cooked perfectly to give a light, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Very fresh and flavourful.

A PICTURE OF THE GNOCCHI DISH

Then it was time for some Potatoe Gnocchi in parmesan and truffle butter sauce. Superb!

A PICTURE OF THE PORCHETTA DISH

The Porchetta was another choice we made. This one is served with sage, ramps, and smoked apple jam. I found the outer crust very hard and probably overcooked a bit but, the meal itself was delicious as well.

A PICTURE OF THE MANGO DESERT

Finally, even though we were full, it was time for dessert. It’s just not a proper dining experience without the finale. So we had the local Mango with coconut and cashew. Perfect!

THE DEBRIEF

I read a few reviews for Senia days before the reservation. The majority had a very favourable tone. Many said it was the best meal they ever had and most raved about the excellent service. Almost all said they would be returning. I have to add my voice to that. It was a very pleasurable dining experience that I’m sure I will enjoy again and I have no qualms about recommending it to others.

👍👍👍
